Child Labor Law Petition

By Amber Nicole Hammons, 11 years old

The child labor laws should be lifted. Children should be able to have a job if they want one, whether to prove themselves, to save up for college themselves because their families can't pay for it, to save up for a house or because they want to help support the family.

Me and my two younger siblings live with our grandparents, and I want to bring in money to help us get along in life but the law won't let me. I'm eleven and I know some kids have the same problems or something near it. They say children are unable to work, and that they are immature. Usually young kids are immature and they don't know how to work or they don't want to, but there are kids my age who have grown out of being immature and think they are ready to have a job.

If you look at it from one of the angles, its kind of like how the women could work but got paid less. The fact we can't even have a chance to try work is unfair and counterproductive to the economy. If we had the choice to work while we were young then we would get used to the fact that when we get older we will have to have one, and we will grow into more responsible adults.

We have to go to school and get good education. People usually have to go to college because they need a degree to have a good job, but some can't pay for it so they end up with bad jobs. We save up over the years so we can have enough, but we are really getting the money from our parents and many adults can't pay for their children to go. If we were able to get jobs when we were younger then it would be easier to go to college and get a better job when we get our degree.

Land cost is increasing and by the time children are old enough to move out, they probably wont have enough money because the law said they couldn't work until they were older and they probably have bad jobs because they didn't have enough money to go to college.

I know that child labor laws where enforced because people where chaining three year olds to machines and making them work, but do you really think that people are going to do that today? And if its because the population is too great and there aren't enough jobs then why not try to help people from having kids at such a young age?

When kids get to a certain age they want to learn things and one of those is how they are going to make a living. The law says that they aren't old enough, but when they do get to the age that the laws says is old enough they are lazy and are no longer interested.
