This page describes the concept I originally sent to David Chalk. He suggested I replace the rotating back plate with a valve that moved out of the way of the rotating vane to allow it to pass. The rotating back plate would minimize noise and vibration, but would make the engine much more difficult to seal.

In addition to providing a better seal, the valve method would use less materials and allow the engine to take up less space.

Shown here in the start position, the vane fits in a slit in the back plate.

Both the back plate and the vane are rotating at a one to one ratio.
Rotation continues.
At 180 degrees, the vane is again fitting in the slits in the back plate
